Anyone who attended the July 16 Chino Valley Unified School Board meeting may have wondered if they stumbled into the Twilight Zone. Board Member Andrew Cruz went on an incoherent 10-minute rant exposing ignorance, bigotry and incompetence.
He started by criticizing transgender individuals, saying it’s unnatural for children to be raised without their biological mother and father. Look around How many members of this community are single parents? How many have adopted? How many are raising grandchildren? How many are stepparents?
He then jumped to the church massacre in Charleston, S.C., defending the Confederate flag and proclaiming that “we’re no longer a racist society.” He went so far as to blame President Obama’s policies for increasing the violence against African Americans. How sad that he would take a tragedy that so clearly stemmed from racism and twist it to fit his own agenda.
Then he turned to the new law that removes personal beliefs as a reason to exempt children from school vaccinations. This was widely supported by health officials. He called this law “un-American” and blamed “illegal aliens” for bringing disease, such as Ebola, into the country.
Mr. Cruz must be terribly confused about his role as a member of a local school board. When he was elected, many in the community wondered how someone with no experience in our school system could be elected over more qualified candidates. The answer was sad, but simple: He had support from Calvary Chapel Chino Hills – and his name appeared first on the ballot.
He’s an embarrassment to our community and needs to go.
